Roots was a project for the Software Design course during my Masters program to create a family tree web application. This project was broken up into multiple groups each tasked with part of the design and development process. I was in the Usability group which was tasked with taking the designs from the GUI team, user testing them, writing up feedback as well as suggestions for future iterations of the design. We used surveys as well as task analysis and eye tracking in order to get our results.
This project taught me what it would be like dealing with different departments out side of a classroom. It also showed me the importance of user testing and how it can really affect the usability of a product. One hardship of this was convincing the backend developers of the validity of the test that we conducted
